A working SARS setup

In plain English

SARS needs to know about your business and the taxes that apply to it. That could mean an income tax number, VAT, customs codes if you import or export, and a working eFiling profile to submit returns online. New companies are usually given an income tax number when they register at CIPC, but the eFiling profile, the public officer and the registered details still have to be set up and kept current. Getting this right at the start saves a lot of frustration later.

FAQ

Common questions

Is my new company automatically registered for tax?

Usually, yes. Companies registered at CIPC are normally given an income tax number automatically. Other tax types, like VAT, and the eFiling setup still have to be done separately.

I'm a sole proprietor. Do I register the business separately?

No. As a sole proprietor, you and the business are the same person for tax purposes. Your business income goes on your personal tax return, but you may need to register for provisional tax.

Why does SARS want to verify my details?

SARS verifies identities and banking details to prevent fraud. We'll tell you exactly what's needed and help you through the process.
