In plain English
SARS Customs controls everything that crosses South Africa's borders. To import or export goods commercially, your business needs to be registered as an importer, an exporter or both. Once registered, you get a customs client number that your clearing agent uses to declare your goods, and without it shipments can be delayed or held. On top of that, VAT is usually paid at customs when goods come in, and that VAT must be recorded properly so you can claim it back.

FAQ
Common questions
Do I need to register if I only import once or twice?
There are limited exemptions for occasional, small imports, but most businesses that import regularly need to register. Tell us what you're importing and how often, and we'll confirm.
What's the difference between my clearing agent and your service?
Your clearing agent declares individual shipments to customs. We make sure your business is properly registered with SARS Customs and that the tax side of your imports is correct in your books.
Can I claim back the VAT I paid at customs?
If you're a VAT vendor and the goods are for your business, generally yes, as long as you keep the correct customs documents. We track this for you every VAT period.
